The City of Vancouver Landfill project included the supply and installation of 25 kms of gas collection pipes. The work involved excavating through compacted municipal solid waste, asbestos and leachate contamination. 35 acres of landfill area was closed in order to accommodate the new layers within the phase 3 and 4 sections of the landfill. The groundworks included decommissioning of preexisting underground live gas networks and systems. The layers that make up the LFG expansion project included gravel, sand, topsoil and geotextiles and were capped off with new vegetation. In addition, the infrastructure gas works included vertical extraction well drilling through MSW. M2K installed all associated LFG monitoring devices, valve components and various other complex landfill infrastructure works to make way for the new expansion of landfill gas system upgrades.

Project Challenges:

M2K faced several challenges during the scope of the project such as meeting the clients operational requirements. The City of Vancouver mandated that their LFG system networks were limited in disruption, so that they could continue to collect gas during the site work processes. M2K faced continuous settlement challenges in various critical areas, up to 20 cm per month, which transcended into M2K persevering to maintain the clients tight schedule requirements.

Project Highlights:

M2K successfully sourced and imported significant quantities of materials to meet the demands of the project specifications. Approximately over 100,000 m3 of soil, over 60,000 m3 of gravel and rolled out over 150,000 m2 of filter liner cloth. M2K accomplished fine grading of 100,000 tonne of gravel to within 1 cm specification.

Estimated Project Value: $20,000,000
